  Wanted Poster The students will examine a fairy tale character of their choice in great detail. They will then create a wanted poster that includes the following: a picture of the character, a written description of his/her appearance, a reward amount, and reason(s) the character is wanted.
  The Sky is Falling Learners will culminate their classroom studies of simple machines by developing a machine of their own, capable of accomplishing a simple task. In addition to researching, planning and constructing their machines, students will make an oral presentation to their class as well as participate in a school-wide science fair. Additionally, students will share their projects.
  Wonderful Winter This is a unit that was developed for special education students in grades one and two. This unit will take approximately four weeks to complete. " Winter Is Here," by Kimberly Weinberger, "The Snowy Day," Ezra Jack Keats(cassette tape also), "Sunshine Makes The Seasons," by Franklyn M. Branley, and "The Biggest Best Snowman," by Martha Cleyler are used.
  "Some (Sum) Math Makes a Difference" Studies have shown us that students learn best when what they have to learn in school connects to real life situations. Throughout this learning unit, students will be exposed to a variety of word problems dealing with addition and subtraction. Some of the strategies for word problem solution come from the math text, ADDISON-WESLEY MATHEMATICS, copyright date, 1989.
  Found In Space Students will direct an imaginary visitor from outer space into their galaxy, solar system planet, hemisphine, landmass, country, state, village and street of their school.
  Once Upon A Fairytale This is a primary English/Language Arts unit on Fairytales. The unit will take about 4 weeks to complete. This unit will stress the elements of a fairytale. In this unit students will read for the understanding of the character, setting, and plot points of specific fairytales. The children will create their own fairytales through the writing process. With the use of technology, the children will produce a fairytale book complete with illustrations.
  100th Day Celebration How we can we help people in our community? What are some things we can be thankful for? How can we get information from many people all over the world? What steps do we need to take when planning a project or celebration?
  Amelia Earhart: A Biography The purpose of this learning unit is for students in second grade to read and experience an example of non-fiction, biographical material. The students will also be exposed to the success of an adventurous woman who demonstrated the ability, ingenuity and spunk not common to women of her generation and time. At the end of this unit the children will interview as well as write a biography of a classmate, use the computer to publish the story, and use the digital camera to photograph the student.
  Fables This unit is designed to expose children to a genre of literature know as fables by using three different fables. The primary purpose is for students to discover that fables have animals for characters, which face a problem, and learn a lesson from that problem. They will also learn that fables can be relevant to everyday life through discoveries that are made from reading the different fables and doing various activities.
  A Legendary Experience The purpose of theis experience is to expose students to a different type of genre...Legends. Through this leterary experience and related activities students will gain and understanding of what a legend is, how Native Americans used names to describe a quality of a person, and understand that each state has a special flower as its symbol. This experience will also extend and refine the students'reading and writing skills. As a culminating experience the students will create a drawing of a state flower and place it on a large map of the United States.
  Let's Write a Book! THe purpose of this experience is to write a book with third grade students to honor their retiring teacher. For presentation, the book will be made into a power point production.
  Folk Tales This lesson was developed to integrate the social studies and language arts curriculums. It helps the student investigate different cultures while incorporating their own culture within the experience.
  Land Ho This unit introduces the students to standard and non-standard measurement with a pirate theme. At the culmination of the unit students will understand the difference between standard and non-standard measurement. They will be able to estimate measurements and measure using standard and non-standard measurement tools.
  Habitats The purpose of this unit is to familiarize the students with different habitats of the world. Students will learn the location, plants and animals of each area in the unit. This will be accomplished through classroom experiences and use of the internet.
  A Stitch in Time The reading and quilts unit is a language arts unit developed to nurture a love of reading with a connection to well known quilt patterns and to feature different authors and illustrators. This unit is literature based and spans a period g reading, writing, and technology skills. The unit focuses on the history and origins of various quilt patterns and is designed for use with first and second grade students.
  My Country 'Tis of Thee This unit was created because of the events that happened on September 11, 2001. After reviewing the events of September 11th, it became apparent that the students had confusion as to the significance of landmarks in New York City and Washington. We realized as teachers the importance of our American Heritage and what it means to be an American. The patriotism that has encompassed our nation since that horrific day has brought around a renewed love and allegiance to our wonderful country. As teachers, we wanted to embrace this unification and pass it on to our children. We want the children to know what each patriotic symbol looks like and what it also represents. This unit will focus on the different patriotic symbols and what each one represents.
  Under the Canopy This rainforest unit is an integrated summer reading program designed to reinforce language arts skills with an emphasis on reading and writing. The summer program is designed to help students at risk meet the N.Y. State standards. This unit is literature based and spans a period of four weeks incorporating reading, writing, and technology skills for students who have just completed grades one through five. It will also expose the students to the geographical and scientific significance of a rainforest habitat. This theme based approach to learning a broad topic allows students functioning at a wide variety of levels to work together cooperatively, learn from each other, and have fun together. At risk readers take on the role of the "mentor" or "teacher" when paired with younger students and they are then able to build their self-esteem . These students are rarely able to be the experts with their peer group so this becomes a very positive experience for all the children. In addition, the younger students love the attention from their older classmates. All aspects of the summer program center around the rainforest theme including reading, writing, listening, and speaking projects, art activities, guest readers, and even snacks are woven into the theme. "Under the Canopy" is sure to be a swinging good time for all!

  Book Buddies and Accelerated Reader Introduce Accelerated Reader as a tool to test comprehension of fiction books.
  My Father's Dragon Students will imcorporate technology and language arts to write a new ending to a story and share it with others.
  Thanksgiving Receipts Focusing on listening and writing skills at a second grade level.
  Communities Provide Goods and Services Learning about Goods & Services: What choices do consumers and producers make? What are the consequences of choices that consumers and producers make?
  Dinosaurs to Directions to Dewey Decimal This learning experience was designed for a self-contained special education class of deaf students, some with additional disabilities. The class was of mixed ages working on more on a variety of grade levels in each subject area. In a regular school setting, the learning experience seems most appropriate for second grade classes. However it work that can be revisited throughout the years using different topics (therefore different Dewey Decimal classifications) and by placing the emphasis on different portions of the work the students do.
  Animals of the Chinese Zodiac Students will be introduced to the Chinese zodiac as part of the general introduction to the various elements of the Chinese New Year before they have this learning experience. They will have access to Internet-based information on the Chinese zodiac during this introductory experience.
  Woodland Animals and Their Habitat Students use a variety of media to gain information about specific woodland animals through the use of graphic organizers and a journal. They then use the information to develop an animal report. This unit can be adapted for any grade level and to learn about animals in different habitats.
  Digging for Treasure Language Arts unit-focuses on listening and gathering information. Students read and listen to factual information (biographies) about specific people; questions are presented, students will decide if the information is "Trash or Treasure", and information is used in, completing graphic organizers, writing sentences to answer questions and developing a paragraph. Using vocabulary overview guide, students learn vocabulary specific to a person or time period. Provides opportunities for students to practice and refine writing skills, while learning note-taking skills. By studying people that persist, restrain impulsively, and seek accuracy, students will realize the importance of self-control and self-regulation. Students are assessed through observation and teacher conferences.
  Folklore for Primary Students Essential Questions: How do characters within folklore help us to better understand ourselves as learners? How can the lessons learned in folklore help us to better understand our own experiences and actions? How does working in cooperative groups make us better learners?
  The Pilgrims: Sacrifice for Freedom Many children can associate the Pilgrims with Thanksgiving, but many do not know why the Pilgrims actually came to America and what these people faced when they made the decision to sail to the New World. The purpose of this unit is to go beyond their prior knowledge to answer those questions through activities such as listening, shared writing, videos, story dramatization and role playing activities. A goal is for the children to put themselves in the place of the Pilgrims to enhance their learning.
  Finding Books With OPAC In the Primary Grades The purpose and focus of this learning experience is to introduce or review the knowledge needed, and the process used to successfully and independently find specific books in their Elementary Library Media Center, using the electronic catalog known as OPAC (Online Public Access Catalog)
  World Geography This geography unit begins early in the school year with the "launch" of a Teddy Bear on a trip around the world. The Teddy Bear carries instructions for travel, a journal, addresses, and other information which allows the students to communicate with the people who have the bear. The Teddy Bear is given to someone who is going on an international flight with a note to flight attendants asking that he be shared with children.
  Bravo!! What effect does changing any element in a musical piece have on it? Why do some melodies sound better on different instruments? What is the value of written music? What value do you derive from participating in music? Why would a performer wish to save his/her performance by recording it? What place do recordings have in my life?
  Can You Stretch the Truth? Essential Questions: In what ways do Folk Tales influence our lives? Why are listening skills important through out life? How is it possible for one person to influence the world?
  Opaque, Translucent, and Transparent Define key words. Write a paragraph defending perspective (prediction). Classify objects according to the ability of light to pass through them.
  Fun with Grammar The grade two, ELA unit, Fun with Grammar, will help students become more familiar with the different parts of speech. Students will demonstrate their understanding of nouns, pronouns, adjectives, verbs, adverbs, and preopositions. Students will demonstrate their knowledge of the parts of speech through identifying, categorizing, writing sentences and poetry. This learning unit should take approximately 19 class periods at 45 minutes per period.
  What's Inside Students will read simple informational texts with repetitive language and simple illustrations to begin to collect data, facts and ideas. Students will interpret information represented in pictures, illustrations, and simple charts and webs.
  Once Upon A Time Using a professional storyteller, have students listen to traditional and non-traditional fairy tales. Storyteller will discuss the elements of a fairy tale.
  It's a Cold, Cold World This learning experience presents an introduction to the continent of Antarctica. The experience is built around the story Winston, Newton, Elton, and Ed by James Stevenson. The students enjoy a piece of fictional literature while gathering factual information about where it takes place - the continent of Antarctica.
  Goodness Corillas in our Community The purpose of this learning experience is to extend student's prior knowledge of the term community.
  Soaring through the Solar System The students will be engaged in their learning about our solar system through individual and group activities that focus on research, reading, writing and group work skills. Students will soar through this interdisciplinary unit.
  Castles Who lived and worked in a castle community? How was a castle community the same and different from our community? How did castles change over time and become outdated? How did a castle community meet the member's needs of food, clothing and shelter?
  Once Upon a Castle This interdisciplinary unit introduces children to the history of castles and the elements of a fairy tale. Students read and write fairy tales. They read and work collaboratively on several group projects that are designed to extend knowledge. The highlight of the unit comes when students share their family castle projects.
  Waddle You Know About Penguins Study similarities and differences of the 17 species of penguins.
  Cybernetiquette This learning experience will teach students the basics of safety on the Internet. This learning experience will be a perfect beginning to any Internet activity whether it is within a technology curriculum or other content area. This connects to all areas where instruction will lead to exploration of the Internet. This Learning Experience is tied to the unit called Keypals: Communicating Across the Information Superhighway
